Secondary school jazz bands from around the country strut their stuff

The New Zealand School of Music Jazz Project gives secondary school students and band directors from around the country the chance to work with international jazz musicians in a day of workshops, competitions and clinics, all open to the public.

Guest adjudicators for the big band competition include acclaimed guitarist Bruce Forman; Musical Director of one of the United States’ finest college jazz bands, Matt Harris; Director of Jazz Studies at Vanderbilt University, Ryan Middagh; and New Zealand School of Music lecturer, jazz musician and ethnomusicologist Dave Wilson.

The big band competition runs throughout the day and each band has a 30-minute performance followed by an on-stage workshop led by a guest adjudicator.
